Map of Charleston, South Carolina
"The Holy City"
From it's founding in 1670 as Charles Towne, Charleston
has survived hurricanes, tornadoes, fire, earthquake, and the destruction
of war. Now home to half a million people, Charleston, South Carolina
has become a present day treasure chest of history, culture, beauty,
and
endless
entertainment.
Start your adventure at the Charleston Visitor's Center.
Many types of tours are available, including horse drawn carriage, water,
and air. The Dash Trolley provides affordable transportation throughout
the historic district, and walking is still one of the best ways to see
the sights of Charleston.
With our map as your guide, find the many historic churches
that make the city "holy", walk by the historic houses of colonial,
antebellum, and victorian architecture on the Battery and Rainbow Row.
Relax in Waterfront Park, take a boat tour to Fort Sumter and Patriot's
Point (go on board the USS Yorktown), and visit the South Carolina Aquarium.
Shop 'til your feet hurt, browse the numerous museums and galleries, watch
women weaving baskets in the historic Old Market Place, stand in the middle
of the Four Corners of Law, eat a great meal at one of the uncountable
restaurants, and then spend a relaxing night in one of the many historic
B & Bs or hotels.
Charleston's vast water frontage provides access to marinas
and many fishing opportunities. Plan your trip for Spoleto Festival USA,
Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, the Family Circle Women's Professional
Tennis Tournament (just north of Charleston on Daniels Island), or experience
Christmas in Charleston.
Cross the Cooper River Bridge to Mt. Pleasant. Shopping
and history abound in this rapidly growing area. Enjoy the seafood of
Shem Creek and tour the exhibits at Patriot's Point.
As in Savannah, don't forget the surrounding areas! Challenge
the golf courses, tennis courts, and beaches of Kiawah Island or Isle
of Palms, enjoy the spectacle of the many gardens and plantations, visit
the campus of the Citadel, take in a River Dogs minor league baseball
game, Stingrays hockey, or a concert at the North Charleston Coliseum,
Convention, and Performing Arts Center. Edisto Island, Seabrook Island,
Folly Beach, and James Island offer beaches and areas of total tranquility.
Cross the Cooper River Bridge to Mt. Pleasant, Sullivan's Island, and
Isle of Palms. Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head are also close by.
Access by Charleston International Airport, Amtrak, Interstate
26, or Highway 17. Approximately 125 miles to Savannah, Georgia. |
